They Turned Me Into a Criminal in My First Life—This Time I Fight Back Chapter 06
As reasonable as Detective Burke sounded, the other officer clearly wasn’t convinced.
He handed over a dashcam recording.
“Detective Burke, this footage documents everything Vivienne Rhodes did. There’s no evidence of tampering. Take a look yourself.”
Burke narrowed his eyes at me suspiciously before pressing play.
The color drained from his face almost instantly.
“How is this possible…?”
Clara let out a mocking laugh.
“Oh, please. Why couldn’t it be her?” she sneered. “She tipped you off first so you’d unknowingly become her alibi after she killed them.”
She crossed her arms smugly.
“And before you arrived, her boss was already trying to cover for her. What does that tell you?”
Burke’s expression darkened as he looked at me.
“Ms. Rhodes, care to explain this?”
I lowered my gaze to the phone in his hand.
Not yet.
The timing still wasn’t right.
I needed to stall a little longer.
Finally, I looked back up at him with wide innocent eyes.
“It wasn’t me.”
“Vivienne, enough!” Clara shrieked. “With all this evidence right in front of us, you really think anyone believes your pathetic denial? Officer, why aren’t you arresting her already?”
At that moment, her fingers were tightly intertwined with Ethan’s.
Burke noticed immediately.
He pointed at Clara.
“And you are?”
Then he pointed toward Ethan.
“And who are you?”
I smiled faintly.
“One’s my husband. The other is my husband’s first love.”
The second the words left my mouth, Ethan and Clara jerked their hands apart.
The guilt on their faces was impossible to hide.
A faint smile curved Burke’s lips as he walked over to Ethan.
“Let me ask you something,” he said coolly. “Where were you when everything happened last night?”
Ethan looked like a terrified quail shrinking into itself.
“I… I was asleep at home,” he muttered. “I drank too much and passed out. If I’d been awake, I never would’ve
let Vivienne go kill someone.”
Burke gave a cold laugh.
“You were blackout drunk, but somehow you know exactly what Ms. Rhodes was doing?”
Ethan immediately looked up, panic flashing through his eyes.
“I… I woke up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom,” he stammered. “I saw her rushing around
packing luggage.”
Another officer stepped forward with additional evidence.
“The neighborhood surveillance footage confirms Ms. Rhodes returned home around two a.m. We also verified her flight records. We arrested her earlier today in Viremont.”
Those words caused the hope in Burke’s eyes to dim.
Disappointment settled across his face as he looked at me.
“Ms. Rhodes,” he said quietly, “I’m asking you one last time. Did you kill them?”
I opened my mouth to answer, but Clara suddenly screamed again behind me.
“There are fingerprints all over the car!” she shouted viciously. “The evidence is right there! Why are you still
refusing to arrest her? Or are you trying to protect a murderer?”
I slowly curled my fingers into my palm before glancing at the time.
Perfect.
Everything was finally in place.
It was time to make my move.
