They Turned Me Into a Criminal in My First Life—This Time I Fight Back Chapter 08

Detective Burke slowly turned toward Ethan and Clara.

His eyes narrowed dangerously.

“Mr. Caldwell,” he said, voice sharp as a blade, “did you just claim that Ms. Rhodes is infertile?”

Ethan immediately stiffened under the pressure.

His leg bounced uncontrollably beneath the table, and he refused to look Detective Burke in the eye.

“Answer me,” Burke barked.

Ethan flinched.

Then finally forced the words out through clenched teeth.

“Yes.”

He swallowed hard.

“She can’t have children.”

Clara jumped in almost immediately.

“Detective, why are we even questioning this?” she said quickly. “Just last week Ethan took her to the hospital for fertility testing! The results were right there in black and white!”

She sounded almost desperate now, like she’d already decided there was no point pretending anymore.

Detective Burke let out a cold laugh.

Then he unfolded the document in his hand.

It was my medical report.

The one I’d received yesterday.

“I accompanied Ms. Rhodes to this appointment myself,” Burke said flatly. “And according to these results,

there is absolutely nothing wrong with her reproductive health.”

A small smile tugged at my lips.

Thank God I’d prepared for this in advance.

The moment Detective Burke called me yesterday, I’d gone straight to the station. He’d praised me for finally

cooperating with the investigation, and in return, I asked him for one favor.

Come with me to the hospital.

Because in my previous life, Ethan and Clara had used my supposed infertility as the perfect motive to frame

And the police had believed them.

This time, I made sure they wouldn’t get that chance again.

Ethan stared blankly at the report, his voice shaking.

“T-Then maybe I remembered wrong…”

I bit down hard on my lip before looking him dead in the eye.

“Oh, you definitely remembered wrong,” I said softly.

“Because the infertile one was never me.”

I slowly turned toward Clara.

“It was her.”

The room instantly went still.

“That’s the real reason you two stole that baby.”

My voice rang through the interrogation room like a gunshot.

Both of their faces drained of color.

Clara had spent years partying, drinking, and sleeping around. Back in college, she’d had multiple abortions.

But one thing Clara had always been good at was manipulating men.

Especially Ethan.

At the time, she’d wrapped him completely around her finger with one simple sentence:

“Ethan… don’t you want a child that belongs to us?”

Then she’d smiled sweetly and added:

“But I don’t want to ruin my body by getting pregnant.”

That was all it took.

Ethan immediately started looking for another solution.

Me.

He wanted me to carry a baby for them.

But I refused.

“I just started at the company,” I’d told him back then. “I want to focus on my career first. I’m not ready for

kids.”

At the time, I thought it was just a normal disagreement between husband and wife.

What I didn’t realize was that my growing resentment toward Ethan had already started weakening whatever

twisted hold he had over me.

The stronger my emotions became, the less control he seemed to have.

And once they realized I would never willingly give them a child…

They decided to steal one instead.

Completely insane.

And yet Ethan had supported the plan without hesitation.

I looked directly at Clara.

“You were the one who kidnapped that baby,” I said coldly. “And you were the one who killed her.”

Then I shifted my gaze toward Ethan.

“But the person behind everything… was him.”

I laughed bitterly.

“And even now, you’re both still lying to the police. Isn’t that pathetic?”

Clara’s breathing turned ragged.

Her entire face twisted with panic and rage.

“So what if it’s true?” she snapped. “Do you have any proof?”

Then she lifted her chin arrogantly.

“Because the surveillance footage only showed you.”

She kept ranting without noticing the increasingly terrifying look on Ethan’s face beside her.

I wiped the tears from the corners of my eyes, laughing softly.

“Didn’t Ethan tell you?”

I tilted my head slightly.

“The second I removed the hair extensions made from my hair… your little spell stopped working.”

The color instantly drained from Clara’s face.

Then I turned toward Detective Burke.

“Detective,” I said calmly, “play the dashcam footage again.”
