The Blind Boy I Picked Up Was the Mafia Don Chapter 05
I pulled back fast-I’d already leaned in way too far-and my cheeks burned.
Alexander hit answer. Leo’s voice came through: “Don Corleone, you’ve been gone from the office all afternoon.”
“Yeah. I’m with someone important. My-” He paused and mouthed the words “girlfriend” at me.
“Alexander!” I panicked and grabbed for the phone.
But he held it up high. I lost my balance, grabbed his collar, and-rip-buttons flew everywhere, giving me an eyeful.
“Ma’am, no need to rush. We’ve got plenty of time for that.” Alexander calmly pulled his shirt together.
I was so stunned by his shamelessness that I couldn’t even speak.
Leo, clearly freaked out, stammered, “There’s a w-wo-woman with you? Don Corleone, should I cancel tonight’s meeting?”
No. I’ll be back soon.” His voice was cool and distant again.
A beat. Just as Alexander was about to hang up, a screech came from the other end.
swear,
“Everyone listen up! Our Don, after all these years single, might finally be getting some! The workaholic who used to do IVs while working just took the whole afternoon off for a girl. And I
his voice has never been so soft. And the girl sounds just like Ms. Clark. Oh my God.” “Wait-Ms. Clark as in Emily Clark? Didn’t she just get back to the country? How would she even know the Don? Leo, are you sure?”
“No way I’m wrong. Ms. Clark’s family is from Jiangnan-soft voice, pale, small, cute as a button, like a little Ragdoll cat. She’s unforgettable.”
“And today at the press conference, tons of people saw the Don carrying her. I knew something was up. The Don never lets women near him.”
“Oh my God, the Don is my dream man. That Emily girl is eating too good. How far have they gone? My heart is breaking. When Emily comes to the office, I’m asking her.”
“Don’t spread rumors. The Don and Isabella grew up together. Emily’s just a regular intern reporter. Why would the Don want her? Y’all believe anything.”
Then someone yelled, “Holy shit, Leo, your phone is still on!”
“Shit!” A wail, and the line went dead.
I sat up straighter, trying to look like I had any authority here. “Alexander, we broke up seven years ago-”
“Ma’am, nobody said ‘break up.’ We were just long-distance for seven years.”
Sunlight poured through the window, casting a soft glow over Alexander’s long, elegant fingers, making even that cheap ring look expensive.
When I found out who Alexander really was, I bought a red-eye ticket and left in a hurry. To avoid any trouble, I changed my number and my iMessage. I never actually sat him down and said we were done.
But seven years without a word? Any normal person would assume it was over.
Alexander was probably just messing with me.
Getting back at me for tricking him into dating me when he was hurt.
“Fine. I’m breaking up with you now.”
“You wasted seven years of my life. How many sevens does a person get? A hundred million for emotional damages isn’t too much, is it?” His voice was lazy, teasing, like a feather brushing your skin.
How did he make something so infuriating sound so… hot?
But Alexander was my and Lucy’s big boss. My career was just starting. I had to suck it up,
All my bravado fizzled out. “Don Corleone… can I do a payment plan?”
“What do you think?” He raised an eyebrow, took my phone, unlocked it with ease, and added himself to my iMessage.
When I got my phone back, he’d pinned himself at the top.
A second later, a transfer for 52,000 showed up.
“What’s this?”
“The doctor said you’ve been malnourished for a long time. Starting today, you’ll have every meal with me-”
“No. Employees have the right to refuse unreasonable requests from their boss.” I was firm.
Alexander slowly finished his sentence. “…and every meal you eat with me, I transfer you 52,000.”
“88,000.” My eyes lit up. I gave him my sweetest smile and tugged on his arm.
Alexander just stared at me without saying a word.
Crap. For a second there, I forgot he wasn’t that blind boy anymore.
I was about to let go, when he said, “Ma’am, you’re beautiful.”
“Wha… what?”
He didn’t look away. “Sorry. My brain short-circuited for a second. That was a slip of the tongue.”
“After thinking about it-Ma’am, you’re really, really beautiful. I’m jealous of everyone who got to see you all those years.”
My heart skipped. Loud.
