He Gave Everyone a Key but Me Chapter 09
As if just hearing the funniest joke in the world, Logan let out a mocking laugh and pointed straight at Kevin.
“Fiancé?”
“She’s been with me for five years. Who the hell do you think you are?”
The words came out without hesitation, filled with possessiveness and the ugly belief that he owned me.
In his eyes, I was nothing more than something that had belonged to him for five years.
The temperature in Kevin’s gaze dropped instantly.
He stepped forward and positioned himself in front of me.
“Mr. Mercer, show some respect.”
“Respect?”
Logan finally lost control. He shoved Kevin’s shoulder.
“I was sharing a bed with her long before you ever existed in the picture!”
“I know every inch of her better than anyone!”
Colleagues leaving work began slowing down, and whispers spread through the crowd.
I looked at Logan’s face, twisted by anger, and suddenly felt sick.
“Logan.”
I stepped out from behind Kevin and met his eyes directly.
“Do you really think that because I slept with you for five years, I automatically belong to you?”
Logan froze.
Something unfamiliar flickered across his face. For the first time, fear.
I looked at him calmly. “So what if I did?”
“Just because you’ve touched me means I can’t marry someone else?”
The words struck like a knife, sharp, precise, and straight through every ounce of his arrogance.
The color drained from Logan’s face.
His lips parted, but no words came out.
Without giving him another glance, I opened the passenger door and got into the car.
Kevin walked around the front and slid into the driver’s seat.
The Bentley pulled away smoothly from the curb.
In the rearview mirror, Logan remained standing there, motionless, like a weathered statue left behind.
The ride was quiet.
Kevin didn’t ask about what had happened.
He simply turned on the stereo and let a soft piano melody fill the car.
“What do you want for dinner?”
He stopped at a red light and glanced over at me.
“Anything is fine.”
I leaned back against the seat, watching the city blur past outside.
“How about the lobster rolls you love?”
“Sounds good.”
For the next several days, Logan didn’t appear.
I thought he’d finally accepted reality.
Until Friday afternoon, I was reviewing a financial report when Amanda called.
“Claire, that lunatic Logan found out which hotel you’re using for the engagement party!”
Amanda sounded furious and panicked at the same time.
“He’s on his way over right now. I’ve already had security block the entrance.”
My hand paused on the mouse.
“What’s he doing there?”
“Who knows what the hell is wrong with him?” Amanda snapped. “He called me earlier and said if he couldn’t see you, he’d trash the entire engagement party.”
I took a deep breath.
“Got it.”
“Don’t worry about him. I’ll be there soon.”
After hanging up, I asked my supervisor for the rest of the afternoon off.
By the time I arrived at the hotel, a crowd had already gathered outside.
Two security guards were blocking Logan in front of the revolving doors.
His dress shirt was wrinkled, his hair a mess.
Bloodshot eyes stared out from a face that had completely lost its usual composure.
“Move!” He was trying to shove past the guards.
“Logan.”
The moment he heard my voice, his head snapped up.
Like a drowning man spotting a lifeline, he threw off the guards and rushed toward me.
“Claire!”
He reached for my hand while I stepped back.
His fingers closed on empty air. His hand froze there. Disbelief filled his eyes.
“You’re really going through with this?”
“You’re really getting engaged to him?”
