He Lent Her My Cullinan, I Canceled His Family’s Cards Chapter 09
Lindsay immediately put on a pitiful expression, her eyes glistening with tears.
“Mrs. Drake, we’re not even in the same league.”
“I’m just an ordinary working girl—three million’s an insane amount of money for someone like me.”
“Please, have a heart and just take the car back.”
As she spoke, she squeezed out a few tears. The performance was almost convincing.
“I promise I’ll pay back the rest of the money within this month. Please, just give me a way out.”
I decided to play along. “Fine. Where’s the car?”
“It’s parked nearby. I’ll take you there right now. You can drive it away yourself.”
I nodded and followed her to where the car was parked.
Then I sent Nicholas a message with my location.
[Come drive a car for me.]
Lindsay handed me the keys. “You can take it now.”
When she saw that I wasn’t getting into the driver’s seat, panic flickered across her face.
“Mrs. Drake, why aren’t you getting in?”
“I’m waiting for Nicholas to drive it.”
The color instantly drained from her face.
“What? Why does Mr. Drake need to drive it? You can just take it yourself!”
“I had a drink this morning. I can’t drive.”
“I can call a driver for you.” She quickly pulled out her phone.
But I stopped her. “No need. Nicholas’s already on his way.”
It was obvious she was anxious, though she tried desperately to hide it.
“Maybe we should still call a driver. Mr. Drake’s busy. We shouldn’t trouble him.”
“He doesn’t mind, so why are you making such a fuss? Nicholas is driving this car, period.”
Just then, Nicholas arrived.
I tossed him the keys. “Take the car.”
Nicholas got in the driver’s seat. “You’re not coming?”
“I’ve got somewhere else to be. Just drive it back to my place.” I said casually.
“Then let me give you a ride.” he said, his voice laced with sincere.
I cut him off. “No need.”
The moment Nicholas was about to start the engine, Lindsay lunged forward and grabbed his arm.
“Mr. Drake, you can’t drive this car!”
Nicholas frowned. “Why not?”
“Just trust me this once. You really can’t drive it!”
“Why? At least give me a reason.”
“You just can’t. Please get out of the car!”
I stood by the car, watching her calmly.
“Funny. A few minutes ago you were rushing me to drive it away, and now Nicholas can’t? Unless you’ve done something to this car.”
Lindsay’s eyes darted around nervously. “No. I just… I just…”
“Just what?”
At that moment, officers from the Veridian Police Department arrived.
“Are you Lindsay Morgan?”
She froze. “Yes.”
“You’re under suspicion for attempted murder. You’ll need to come with us.”
Lindsay stared at them in disbelief.
“Officers, you must have it wrong. How could I possibly try to kill someone?”
“We’ve already obtained witness testimony and physical evidence. You’ll need to come with us.”
One of the officers pulled out a pair of handcuffs and secured them around her wrists.
Nicholas immediately jumped out of the car.
“Officer, you’ve got this wrong. Lindsay would never kill anyone!”
I pointed at the Phantom. “Officers, that’s the car with the brakes she tampered with.”
“She repeatedly tried to get me to drive it—I recorded the whole thing.”
Lindsay’s eyes widened in shock.
I smiled coldly. “Surprised? Your little scheme was under my control from the start.”
“I just played along and let you walk right into it.”
Lindsay was taken away by the police.
I went with the officers to the station to give my statement.
Afterward, I contacted my lawyer and filed charges against Lindsay for intentional property damage and attempted murder.
When we left the station, Nicholas still looked completely dazed.
“How could Lindsay do something like this?” he muttered.
“She’s just a little scatterbrained, that’s all.”
“She’s so sweet, so innocent—there’s no way she’d ever do something illegal.”
