He Sent Me Overseas to Marry Her, I’m Staying Overseas to Never See Him Again Chapter 04
On the way to the airport, I gave him one last test.
“What if I don’t want to go to London today?”
On the other end of the line, Bennett’s breathing paused for the briefest second.
Then his voice dropped.
“The ticket’s already booked. Don’t make this difficult.”
I gave a small laugh.
“Okay.”
A harsh burst of static came through the phone, followed by the sound of a wedding officiant testing a microphone.
“Hello, hello. Is the groom’s side ready?”
Bennett quickly covered the receiver.
But he was too late. The sound had already slipped through.
The cab stopped at a red light.
“Where exactly are you, Bennett?” I asked, my voice deadly calm.
“I’m checking the venue for next week’s industry summit. I have to oversee it myself.”
“Bennett, if I turn this car around right now, will you see me?”
That was the last lifeline I gave him.
The line went completely silent.
Ten seconds passed. Maybe longer.
I waited for him to speak.
“Claire, stop being unreasonable. This is business. Grow up.”
I hummed once and hung up.
When I arrived at the airport departure hall, Mina Chase was waiting for me by security.
“Ms. Rowan, everything’s been handled.”
“The three supervisors from the core team have already submitted their resignations. They’ll be able to join us early next month.”
I nodded lightly and went through security with Mina.
By now, Bennett was probably already slipping in his groom’s suit.
When the plane took off, Mina leaned against the window and looked down at the grid of the city. “It all looks so small from up here, Ms. Rowan.”
“It does,” I said. “And from now on, it has nothing to do with us.”
More than ten hours later, the plane landed in London.
Blinding sunlight streamed through the glass windows.
For the first time, I felt a strange kind of lightness in my chest.
As if something heavy had finally been thrown away for good.
When I turned on my phone, more than a dozen messages from Bennett popped up on the screen.
Bennett: [Have you landed?]
Bennett: [Why aren’t you answering?]
Bennett: [I sent you the driver’s plate number. He’s waiting at the Terminal 2 exit.]
I looked at the messages and did not reply.
With a few taps, I blocked his number, his messages, and every last connection that had tied me to him.
After we left the terminal, Mina pointed toward a company SUV in the distance with the Stellaris Group logo printed on the side.
“Ms. Rowan, Mr. Hale arranged that car for us. Should we go over?”
I answered coldly, “No. That car is filthy. It makes me sick.”
I turned and walked toward a black Bentley sedan that had been waiting by the VIP lane for a long time.
It had been sent by the real controlling shareholder of the international division.
The chauffeur opened the door.
I bent and got in, then looked out the window at Mina.
“Starting today, the London branch belongs to Rowan.”
“As for that backstabbing prick, we’ll treat him like he’s already dead.”
