His Girl Best Friend Mocked My Calm Act—Unhinged Family Shut Her Chapter 03
The next day I woke up on my own. The housekeeper had already set out breakfast.
My mom actually went to the office for once. She said there was a new contract to sign and wanted me to come along. The company would be mine someday anyway.
I ate my avocado toast and changed into a dress. Then I had the driver take me there.
When I walked into the office, I saw Skyler.
She looked up and saw me but didn’t seem surprised. “Grace. Fancy meeting you here.”
Before I could say anything, I heard Cole’s voice behind me.
He clapped his hands to get everyone’s attention, then glanced at Skyler and announced loudly, “Skyler is a Harvard Business School graduate. Her resume is incredible.”
“Our marketing department needed a manager, so I hired her. Everyone give her a warm welcome.”
Everyone clapped politely and then went back to work.
Skyler walked over and draped her elbow over Cole’s shoulder. She smiled at me.
“Don’t worry, Grace. I keep my professional and personal life separate.”
“I gave your boyfriend a little lecture last night. But today at work, I’m his subordinate. And also… your boss.”
She looked at me smugly and patted Cole’s chest. “Looking forward to working for you, Director Mitchell.”
Cole quickly said to me. “Skyler is really talented. I hired her for her professional skills. It has nothing to do with our personal history.”
I watched the two of them go back and forth and chuckled quietly.
Cole saw me smile and stepped closer. “Grace, Skyler brought the ring today. She’ll give it back later. Don’t be mad.”
I shook my head. “I’m not mad. But I do have one question.”
When Skyler heard that I wasn’t mad, a flicker of disdain crossed her face.
“What right do you have to hire someone as manager at our company?”
“You don’t actually think you earned your position here on merit, do you?”
