His Grandfather Chose Me But I Chose His Dying Cousin Chapter 05
As Evan walked past me, he rubbed his nose.
Then he lowered his voice and said, “Don’t forget what I just told you.”
He looked so smug, as if he could already see himself holding all that power in his hands.
Unfortunately for him, his pride did not last long.
After everyone entered the living room, Mr. Crawford Sr. came downstairs with his cane and
stepped onto the platform that had already been set up.
Though his hair was completely white, he still looked strong and sharp.
Smiling, he took my hand.
“Clara
“Today is a special day, and I have an announcement to make.” He paused, then continued, has turned twenty. According to the agreement I made with her grandfather years ago, she will choose one of the younger men in the Crawford family to be her husband. After the wedding, I will give the couple eighty percent of my personal holdings.”
Mr. Crawford Sr. had been in business for decades and was one of the wealthiest men in the state.
The true extent of his fortune had long been a mystery.
Forget eighty percent. Even twenty or thirty percent would be more money than most people could
earn in several lifetimes.
Envy appeared on the faces of everyone in the living room.
“Now, let’s invite the two young people up here so I can witness this myself.”
Evan straightened his back, lifted his chin, and had already taken one step forward.
But Mr. Crawford Sr. stopped him and smiled toward Harrison instead.
Harrison had changed into a formal suit. Under the lights, he stood tall and elegant, nothing like the
sickly invalid everyone remembered.
Holding a bouquet, he walked to the front of the platform.
“Clara, are you ready?”
The living room erupted into noise.
“Why him?”
“Wasn’t Clara obsessed with Evan? Why would she choose Harrison?”
“Exactly. This has to be a mistake, right?”
Evan’s face turned bright red.
He asked urgently, “Granddad, is there some mistake?”
Mr. Crawford Sr. gave him a sharp look.
“I may be old, but I’m not deaf or blind. How could I make a mistake about something this
important?”
Mr. Walsh stepped in.
“Mr. Crawford Sr. made it very clear. Clara chose Harrison as her fiancé.”
Evan cut him off.
“Impossible. There has to be a mistake.”
Then he turned to me, his face full of expectation.
“Clara, it’s a mistake, right? You chose me. Granddad must have read it wrong, didn’t he?”
I scoffed.
“I chose Harrison.’
Harrison looked up in surprise when he heard my answer.
There was a trace of disbelief in his eyes.
Evan, on the other hand, grabbed my hand in a rage.
“You love me. Everyone in the city knows that. How could you possibly choose this sickly invalid?”
“Granddad must have gotten it wrong.”
Mr. Walsh quickly pulled Evan away.
Then he turned to the murmuring Crawford cousins and snapped, “What are you waiting for? Get
him out of here.”
Only then did the Crawford cousins snap back to their senses.
They dragged Evan away.
But Evan still refused to accept it.
He shouted at me, “Clara, say something. Tell them you made a mistake. Tell them you chose me.”
Mr. Crawford Sr. waved his hand impatiently and ordered someone to close the doors.
Only then did everything finally quiet down.
Mr. Walsh handed me a document envelope.
“Clara, this is a small token from Mr. Crawford Sr. He wishes you both all the best and a lifetime of
happiness.”
Looking at the document envelope, I knew exactly what was inside.
It contained the business empire Mr. Crawford Sr. had spent half his life building.
