His Grandfather Chose Me But I Chose His Dying Cousin Chapter 06
Later that evening, at the Thanksgiving family dinner, I looked around but still did not see Evan
anywhere.
Holding a glass of wine, I turned around and happened to walk right into Harrison’s arms.
The familiar scent of agarwood surrounded me.
In an instant, my eyes stung with tears.
I remembered my previous life, when Evan had switched my medication and I was rushed to the
hospital after being poisoned.
Harrison had begged the doctors and nurses like a madman to save me.
He punched Evan in the face and roared, “I should never have let her marry you.”
After I died, Harrison gathered a great deal of evidence against Evan and had him sent to prison.
By then, I was already a wandering ghost.
Even so, I was shocked by everything Harrison did.
I could not understand why he would go that far for me.
But after being reborn, one voice in my mind was especially clear.
“Marry him. You won’t regret it.”
After dinner began, Mr. Crawford Sr. called Harrison to the head table.
His meaning could not have been clearer.
Harrison was now his chosen successor.
Harrison did not act timid or awkward. He sat down beside Mr. Crawford Sr. with calm confidence.
The relatives and family friends could not help whispering among themselves.
Everyone had assumed I was determined to marry Evan. No one had expected this sudden change.
Besides, hadn’t everyone said Harrison had been in a car accident and supposedly could not even perform anymore?
Why would Clara choose him?
While everyone was still speculating, Evan shoved through the crowd, reeking of alcohol, and
forced his way to Mr. Crawford Sr.’s side.
He pleaded, “Granddad, you can’t let them get engaged.”
Seeing him drunk and out of control, Mr. Crawford Sr. was both furious and anxious.
“Take him away. If he’s drunk, send him home to rest. Don’t let him embarrass himself here.”
But Evan refused to leave.
“Granddad, Clara and I are childhood sweethearts, and we love each other. You can’t tear us apart.”
Mr. Crawford Sr. glanced at me and said sarcastically, “You grew up together and love each other?
That’s not what I heard.”
“Clara, say it yourself.”
I smiled slightly, my tone calm.
“Mr. Crawford Sr., I don’t know why Evan would say that.”
“I’ve only ever seen him like an older brother, and the person he likes is my sister, Lily. It isn’t
me.”
Evan’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“Clara, you’re the one I like. It’s you.”
Then he suddenly gave a strange laugh.
“I get it now. You’re jealous, aren’t you? That’s why you’re using Harrison to make me angry. You’re still upset that I gave Lily your birthday gift, right?”
Expressionless, I said, “Evan, don’t make things up. I’m already engaged to Harrison.”
The moment he heard that, Evan’s face twisted as he tried to lunge forward and hug me.
“Clara, you can’t get engaged to someone else. You can only love me.”
Unfortunately for him, before he could even touch me, Harrison had already pulled me behind him.
“Evan, this is Thanksgiving dinner. So many relatives and family friends are here. Stop making a
scene.”
“Clara chose me.”
Evan spat in contempt.
“And what the hell are you? You think you’re worthy of talking to me?”
“What about me? Am I worthy?”
Mr. Crawford Sr. struck his cane against the floor with a heavy thud.
Everyone went silent.
“You disgraceful bastard. Starting today, you are not to set foot in the company. Stay home and
think about what you’ve done.”
Evan still refused to give up.
“Clara, tell Granddad the person you love is me. It’s me.”
I ignored him completely.
Instead, I turned and smiled at Harrison.
But he avoided my eyes.
