I Woke Up Seven Years Later And Left My Cheating Husband Chapter 02
Seeing the tension on Bennett’s face, Claire found it almost funny.
The Bennett standing in front of her now still seemed to love her, as if he actually cared whether she knew the truth.
He had even once said, “Claire, you’re not leaving me. Not in this life.”
“If you dare run, I’ll drag you back no matter where you hide.”
But if he had truly cared about her, he would not have lied to her for five whole years.
He would not have looked at the version of her from seven years ago and told her everything so coldly, dealing her a fatal blow.
And he certainly would not have said so condescendingly, “Now I’ve told you the truth. But can you really bring yourself to divorce me?”
The Bennett from seven years in the future had been willing to treat her with such cruelty.
The Bennett in front of her now did not even have the courage to tell her the truth.
The Claire from seven years in the future had been unwilling to let go after wasting seven years of her life, so she had not been able to divorce him.
But the Claire standing here now could.
The only problem was that Bennett was still Bennett. He would never let her leave easily.
So Claire decided to keep the divorce from him for now, in case it caused more trouble.
She forced a strained smile. “I just got here. Why?”
Bennett let out an almost imperceptible breath of relief. Then he stepped forward and placed the baby in her arms.
“I wanted to surprise you, but you found out early.”
“This is our child.”
Their child?
Only a few hours ago, she had heard him say with his own mouth, “He’s my son with Mia.”
How ironic.
Claire stood there without moving, her eyes flat and cold.
Seeing the look on her face, Bennett frowned. “You don’t like him?”
Claire took a step back and smiled. “If I don’t, can we return him?”
What she really wanted to ask was whether, if she did not like the child, they could shove him back into Mia’s womb.
But she could not say that.
She could only swallow it.
Bennett’s expression darkened. When he spoke again, his voice carried a finality that allowed no argument.
“Claire, the adoption papers are already complete. We can’t return him.”
The two of them stood facing each other, the air between them tense, until Mia’s soft, delicate voice broke the silence.
She naturally took the baby from Claire, her shoulder pressed close against Bennett’s arm as she gave his sleeve a subtle tug.
“Bennett-Mr. Ford, it’s not a big deal for the Ford family to raise a few more children. If Mrs. Ford doesn’t like this one, we can always adopt another one she does like.”
After a pause, Mia looked at Claire, a faint hint of provocation hidden in her eyes.
“What kind of child would Mrs. Ford like? A boy? A girl? Someone sweet and obedient, or someone a little more lively?”
Claire was so furious that she almost laughed. “What, are you going to custom-order a child for me?”
Mia said meaningfully, “Mrs. Ford, I’ll do my best.”
“After all, we have plenty of time.”
Her head was lowered, and she looked perfectly meek.
But from an angle no one else could easily see, Mia’s hand lightly patted Bennett’s back.
It was as if she were saying, “Whatever kind of child Mrs. Ford wants, we can just try to have another one for her.”
A sharp pain stabbed through Claire’s chest. She no longer dared to keep watching, so she chose the farthest corner and sat down.
Throughout the entire meal, everything tasted like nothing. She did not say another word.
After dinner, the baby started fussing. The moment he was out of Bennett’s arms, he screamed at the top of his lungs.
Bennett had no choice but to keep holding him.
The crying grated on Claire until she could not bear it anymore, so she turned and went into the kitchen.
Mrs Ford Sr. was preparing fruit for dessert. Claire walked straight over and got right to the point. “Mom, I actually heard everything you were saying earlier.”
With a sharp clang, Mrs. Ford Sr.’s hand jerked, and the fruit knife fell to the floor.
Claire looked at her calmly and spoke in a quiet voice. “The day after I woke up after my hysterectomy, you came to me with divorce papers. Back then, I was sure Bennett would never abandon me, so no matter what you said, I refused to sign. But now…”
A mocking smile pulled at the corner of Claire’s mouth.
“Do you still have those divorce papers? I want to sign them.”
