My Boyfriend Faked His Death, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 05

Carter and Kendra were about to leave without the fish.

“Babe, let’s not shop at markets anymore. They’re so dirty and smelly,” Kendra whined. “My shoes are ruined.”

Carter, holding their daughter, got annoyed. “Kendra, were you always this high-maintenance?”

Before he finished, a male voice called out:

“Hey babe. Made your favorite—honey BBQ ribs.”

It was my husband. Dylan Cross.

Dylan walked over fast, carrying an insulated lunch bag.

Carter stopped. His eyes scanned Dylan’s face, his clothes, and finally the plain band on his ring finger—matching mine.

I couldn’t read his expression.

After a brief pause, Carter turned to me with a smirk.

Like he was saying: Really, Avery? That’s who you picked? Your taste is terrible.

I ignored him. Opened the lunch bag. Warm steam and delicious smell rose up.

Carter stepped up and patted Dylan’s shoulder. “Hey man, you know Avery doesn’t eat canned sardines, right? You didn’t know that?”

I froze with my fork halfway to my mouth. Then I laughed bitterly.

Carter still remembered I used to hate sardines.

But people change.

A few years ago, money was tight. I started eating things I’d never touch.

Like canned sardines. Cheap, high in iron and protein.

Right in front of him, I took a bite.

Dylan’s cooking was good. The sardines were tender, no fishy taste.

Dylan blinked at Carter’s words, then looked him over carefully. “Wait—Carter Wells?”

Now it was Carter’s turn to blink. “You know me?”

“I’m Dylan. Dylan Cross. Transferred into your class junior year.”

Dylan turned to Kendra. “And you’re Kendra Vance, right?”

“So you two ended up together? Married?”

“That’s great. Yeah. Good.” Dylan smiled.
